Hello and Welcome!
TO MEGA-EVENTS, A JOURNEY TO A PhD
Let me introduce myself, I’m Alice, from Lisbon, Portugal and I am 24 years old. Currently, I am a second year PhD student at University of Surrey, working on a project titled: “Privatisation of Public Spaces and Stakeholder Management in a Mega-Events Context: A Tokyo 2020 Olympic Local Business Perspective”. I started in September 2019 at Coventry University, just after finishing my master’s degree in International Events Management there. And then transferred to the University of Surrey this year to finish my PhD.
My research focuses on how mega-events, more specifically the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, are used as a way of shock, providing the event organisation with extraordinary powers that enable the privatisation of public spaces, by utilising Shock Theory. Along with, how such privatisation results in the temporary transformation of these spaces into private properties, by drawing on Property Theory. And finally, how the use and design of public spaces for mega-events aim to influence the inclusion and/or exclusion of particular interest using the Stakeholder Theory.
This blog is dedicated to the subjects I will be researching, whilst sharing my journey as a PhD student, by giving useful tips and advices that were very useful for me.
